Interview with Dominic Skinner – OMG!

I have written this post in English too! Just scroll down a bit:-) It’s just this time, you know that my blog content is in German. But because we are talking about Dom himself, I obviously needed to include the English version!

Ich weiss gerade nicht, wo ich anfangen soll. Ihr wisst, dass ich seit Jahren ein riesiger Fan von M∙A∙C bin. Ebenso bin ich ein riesiger Fan von Dominic Skinner, dem Senior Artist von M∙A∙C Cosmetics UK. Dieser Mann ist so talentiert und so besonders. Auf Instagram lässt er uns ein klitzekleines Bisschen an seiner M∙A∙C-Welt teilhaben und zeigt uns dabei nicht nur die Neuigkeiten, die M∙A∙C zu bieten hat, er zeigt uns auch die tollen Looks, die er kreiert. Und glaubt mir eines – er ist einfach unschlagbar gut! Sein Charme und sein einzigartiger Look runden seine gesamte tolle Persönlichkeit ab. Dom ist seit 2004 im Business und hat bereits schon mit Alexander McQueen zusammengearbeitet. Das sagt doch schon alles, oder? Besucht doch seine Instagramseite und geniesst die wundervollen Produkte und die noch tolleren Looks. Ich fühle mich so geehrt, dass er sich Zeit nahm und all meine Fragen beantwortet hat – sehr detailliert beantwortet hat! Ich kann wirklich nicht in Worte fassen, wie glücklich ich gerade bin. Falls ihr die originalen Antworten lesen möchtet, dann scrollt etwas runter. Dort findet ihr die unbearbeiteten Antworten auf Englisch. Ich habe es nachfolgend auf Deutsch übersetzt. Aber ihr wisst ja, auf Englisch kann man sich einfach besser ausdrücken:-) Dominic hat im Interview einige Produkte empfohlen. Ich musste mir natürlich einige Sachen davon kaufen und habe gleich für euch einen Look geschminkt, damit ihr die Produkte aufgetragen sehen könnt. Die Fotos findet ihr unten in der Galerie. Hinterlasst mir doch ein Feedback in den Kommentaren, ich würde mich sehr darüber freuen!

1. Welches sind deine Geheimnisse für perfekt hydratisierte Haut? Welche Produkte benutzt du, um eine glowy Haut zu kreieren?

„Ein Geheimnis ist, die eigene Haut richtig kennen zu lernen. Viele Personen, die ich treffe, beschreiben ihre Haut als ‚trocken, ölig, Mischhaut‘. Wir sprechen hier aber von einem komplexen Organ. Es kann nicht so einfach sein, die Haut zu beschreiben.

Das ausschlaggebende Produkt, um eine glowy Haut zu erzielen (unabhängig vom eigenen Hauttyp), ist das M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Essential Oil. Dieses Öl ist ein wahres Wundermittelchen. Ich arbeite es nach der Reinigung in die Haut ein, mische einige Tropfen mit meiner Pflege oder der Foundation oder verwende es sogar über der Foundation, um einen noch stärkeren Glow zu erzeugen. Mein Trick ist aber, einige Tropfen in die M∙A∙C Cream Colour Base in der Farbe Luna oder Pearl zu mischen und das Produkt auf die Wangenknochen und unter die Augenbrauen zu tupfen. Dies sieht wunderschön aus!“

2. Welcher M∙A∙C Lippenstift ist sehr toll, wird aber grundsätzlich übersehen? Wieso liebst du ihn und weshalb denkst du, wird ihm zu wenig Liebe geschenkt?

„Der Modesty Lippenstift ist meiner Meinung nach der ultimative Nude-Lippenstift. Es ist die Farbe der Lippen, sodass man den Lippenstift auf den Lippen nicht sofort erkennt, aber genau deshalb ist er so genial. Die Farbe sieht aus wie die eigene Lippenfarbe, nur besser. Die Textur ist creamy, weshalb die Lippen weich und hydratisiert aussehen. Dieser Lippie erhält immer mehr Anhänger. Wenn du ihn also noch nicht getestet hast, tu es und nehme teil an der Revolution.“

3. Welches Makeup-Rezept sollte jedermann kennen? (Zum Beispiel eine Mixtur?)

„Um den besten surrealen Highlighter zu kreieren, benutze ich 4 oder 5 Tropfen vom M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Essential Oil, eine kleine Menge von der M∙A∙C Silverlite Strobe Cream und ebenfalls eine kleine Menge des Mineralize Skinfinish in der Farbe Soft & Gentle. Vermische die drei Sachen und trage sie auf die Erhöhungen des Gesichts mit einem #184 M∙A∙C Fächerpinsel auf. Es ist bezaubernd!“

4. Tipps und Tricks für Touchups tagsüber, um einen frischen Look zu erzielen?

„M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Fix+ ist DAS Produkt, um das Makeup frisch zu halten. Spritze es vor der Pflege auf die Haut, um extra Feuchtigkeit zuzuführen, benutze es dann nach dem Auftrag des Makeups und tagsüber, wann immer erwünscht. Dieses Produkt ist wie ein Glas Wasser für die Foundation, damit sie den ganzen Tag frisch und glowy aussieht.“

5. Welches ist das langanhaltendste Produkt von M∙A∙C?

„M∙A∙C hat sehr viele langanhaltende Makeup-Produkte. Wir haben eine komplette Linie namens Pro Longwear, die designed wurde, um 16 bis 24 Stunden zu halten. Aber das langanhaltendste Produkt von M∙A∙C ist die Pro Acrylic Body Paint. Diese kleinen Wundermittelchen gleiten sehr glatt über die Haut und verschmieren nicht. Ich erinnere mich, diese an einem World Body Painting Festival in Österreich an einem Model getestet zu haben und das Model hatte das Design auf dem Rücken noch drei Tage später. Sie sind unglaublich!“

6. Welches ist der Top Makeup Trend im Moment?

„Zurzeit sieht man überall Glitzerlippen. Dieser Trend explodierte förmlich und ist der Top Trend für AW16. Ich denke, dies soll eine Rebellion gegen die matten Lippen darstellen, die wir in den letzten Jahren gesehen haben.“

7. Welches sind deine Top 3 Makeup-Produkte von M∙A∙C und wieso? 

„M∙A∙C hat viele ikonische Produkte, sodass es einfach ist, Favoriten zu nennen, aber eben nicht nur drei. Ich werde hier aber meine Top 3 unentdeckten Produkte nennen. Das erste Produkt ist der Lightful C Cleanser. Dieser Reiniger ist unglaublich. Er reinigt die Haut quietschig rein aber macht die Haut gleichzeitig sehr weich. Das zweite Produkt wäre die Cream Colour Base in der Farbe Vintage Rose. Dieses Produkt ist sehr vielfältig einsetzbar und kann auf den Augen, den Lippen und den Wangen benutzt werden. Dieses Produkt ist aus meinem Red Carpet Kit nicht wegzudenken. Und das dritte Produkt wäre die Mineralize Compact Foundation. Dies ist eine Creamfoundation, die häufig übersehen wird. Jedes Mal, wenn ich sie aber an einem Kunden benutze, werde ich gefragt, was es ist. Sie lässt sich auftragen wie Butter, sieht aber sehr samtig aus. Einfach grossartig.“

8. Was ist deiner Meinung nach das grösste Makeup-No-Go?

„Ich weiss nicht genau, was ich von dieser Frage halten soll. Makeup war schon immer und sollte auch für immer eine Art Expression von dir selbst sein. Es ist eine befreiende, Selbstvertrauen bildende, persönliche Kunstform und ich würde es hassen, wenn jemand hierzu Regeln bilden würde. Ich sage also, es gibt keine No-Gos. Mach was du fühlst und liebe es. Sei inspiriert und inspiriere.“

9. Was ist deine Empfehlung betreffend Gesichtspflege, welche sich für jeden Hauttyp eignet?

„Ich habe bereits einige Male die M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Essential Oils erwähnt, aber diese Öle sind wirklich perfekt für jeden Hauttyp. Benutze 1 bis 2 Tropfen bei öliger Haut und einige Tropfen mehr auf trockener Haut. Ich liebe auch das Lightful C Essence Serum und die Mineralize Eye Cream. Ich bin besessen von der Gesichtspflege von M∙A∙C. Ich benutze sie jeden Tag und schwöre darauf.“

10. Welche Beautytools sind absolute Musthaves? (Zum Beispiel Pinsel, Schwämme, Wimpernzange etc.)

„Meine Tools, die ich so ziemlich bei jedem Job verwende sind folgende Pinsel: #138 ist der perfekte Puderpinsel, Konturpinsel sowie Blush- und Highlighterpinsel in einem. #159 eignet sich für Creamkontur und der #221 ist der beste Miniblender, den ich je benutzt habe. Aber es spielt keine Rolle, wie gut deine Tools sind, wenn sie dreckig sind. Deshalb füge ich noch den M∙A∙C Brush Cleanser hinzu, welcher die Pinsel reinigt und desinfiziert, sodass sie sich wie neu anfühlen.“

So, das wäre es gewesen mit dem Interview. Leider. Liebt ihr seine Antwort zur Frage 8 nicht auch so sehr wie ich?! Hiermit möchte ich mich nochmals herzlich bei Dom bedanken. Für mich ist es überhaupt nicht selbstverständlich, dass er sich die Zeit genommen hat, meine Fragen zu beantworten! Danke! I don’t even know where to start. You already know that I am a big fan of M∙A∙C since so many years. And I’m a big fan of Dominic Skinner, the Senior Artist for M∙A∙C Cosmetics UK. This man is so talented and so so special. On Instagram he shows us some of his M∙A∙C world and he doesn’t only show us the amazing news, that M∙A∙C is coming out with. He’s also showing us those perfect looks he creates. Believe me – he’s the master himself! His charming nature and his unusual look make his personality even more perfect. Dom is since 2004 in this business and he has worked with Alexander McQueen in the past. This says it all, right? Visit his Instagram page and just enjoy those wonderful products und the stunning looks he does. I feel so honoured that he took the time to respond to my questions – and he did it so detailed! I can’t find the right words to tell you how happy I am right now. Dominic recommended some products so I bought some of them and did a makeup look using those products. 1. What are your secrets for perfectly hydrated looking skin? What products do you use to create a glowy skin?

“One secret to a hydrated looking skin is to really get to know your skin. So many people I meet describe their skin in one word, ‚dry, oily, combination‘, but we’re talking about a complex living breathing organ. It’s not going to be that simple.

The key product to a glowy skin, no matter what skin you might have, is M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Essential Oil. This is a miracle in a bottle. I use it to press into the skin after cleansing, mix in a few drops into moisturise or foundations and even press it on top for added glowiness! But my trick is to add a drop to M∙A∙C Cream Colour Base in either Luna or Pearl and tap it onto the cheek bones and above the brow bow. It looks insanely gorgeous.”

2. What is the most underrated M∙A∙C lipstick in your opinion? Why do you love it and why do you thinkpeople don’t talk about it that much?

“Modesty lipstick, in my opinion is the ultimate nude lipstick on the market. It is unreal. It’s is the colour of lips so when it’s on you don’t instantly see it but that’s the genius of it. It looks like you lips only better. It’s a creamy texture so they look cushiony soft and hydrated. Wear it with a striped back look and it looks fresh, but team it up with a smokey eye and your lips look luxurious. There is a growing army of fans for this little lippy. So if you haven’t tried it yet, do and be a part of the revolution.”

3. Which makeup recipe should people know about? (For example a mixture?)

“For creating the best surreal highlighter you can imagine, you can’t beat four or five drops of M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Essential Oil, a squidge of M∙A∙C Silverlite Strobe Cream and a scrapping of M∙A∙C Mineralize Skin Finish in Soft & Gentle. Mix it together and apply to all the high plains of the face with a #184 M∙A∙C Fan Brush. It’s bedazzling!!”

4. Tips or tricks for touch ups throughout the day for a fresh look?

“M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Fix+ is such a wizz at getting makeup to stay fresh. Spray it over the face before moisturising to add extra hydration deep into the skin, then use it lightly over your finished makeup and again throughout the day. It’s like a glass of water for your foundation, keeping it looking fresh glowing all day long.”

5. What is the most longwearing product from M∙A∙C?

“There’s loads of longwearing makeup at M∙A∙C. We have a complete range of products called Pro Longwear that designed to stay out for between 16 to 24 hours. But the most longwearing is the M∙A∙C Pro Acrylic Body Paints. These little pots of magic go on super smooth and will not budge. I remember testing these out at the world body painting festival in Austria and the model had the back design on three days later. They are incredible!!”

6. What is the top makeup trend right now?

“You can’t go anywhere without seeing a Glitter Lip. It’s truly exploded as the top trend for AW16. I feel it’s a rebellion against the Matte Lip that we’ve seen for the last few years.” 

7. What are your top three makeup products from M∙A∙C and why?

“M∙A∙C have so many iconic products that it makes it easy to pick favourites but hard to pick just three. However, to narrow it down I would pick my three top ‚undiscovered‘ M∙A∙C products. The first would be, Lightful C Cleanser. This face wash is unreal, it makes your skin squeaky clean‘ but soft at the same time. The second would have to be, Vintage Rose Cream Colour Base. It’s the most versatile products for eyes, lips and cheeks and is a staple item in my red carpet kit. And third I would choose Mineralize Compact Foundation. It’s a cream do foundation that is always over looked. However, whenever I use it on a client they always ask me what it is. It goes on like butter but looks like velvet. Totally sublime.”

8. What is the biggest no-go when it comes to makeup?

“I’m not sure how I feel about this question. Makeup has been and always should be an expression of yourself. It’s a liberating, confidence building, personal art form and I would hate for anyone to put constraints on that. So I say there is no ’no-goes‘. Do what you feel and love it. Be inspired and be inspiring.” 

9. What’s your skincare recommendation for every skin type?

“I’ve mentioned it a few times but the M∙A∙C Prep + Prime Essential Oil is incredible for any skin type. Just use one or two drops for an oilier skin and a few more for a drier skin. I also love the M∙A∙C Lightful C Essence serum and the Mineralize Eye Cream. I am obsessed with M∙A∙C Skin Care. I use it every day and rate it highly.”

10. Which beauty tools are a must in every makeup stash? (For example brushes, sponges, eyelash curlers etc.)

“My go to tools for pretty much every job are the M∙A∙C Brushes #138, it’s the perfect powder, contour, blusher & highlighter brush in one. The #159, it melts do bastion into the skin like a dream but also great for any cream contour. The #221 is such the best mini blender I’ve used. But it doesn’t matter how good your tools are if they are dirty and unhygienic so I great addition is the M∙A∙C Brush Cleanse. It’s cleans and sanitises making your brushes as good as new.”
